The Sultan & His Birthday Cake

Side note: “nak” in Malay means “want;” Sulaiman’s use of it translates directly to “I want.”

 

Me: Ayub wake up baby…

Ayub: no. I don’t wanna go to school.

Sulaiman: nak go to school!

Me: there’s no school today. Its a public holiday because its the sultan’s birthday.

Ayub: (pauses) whut?

Me: The sultan. Its his birthday.

Ayub: the zazan birthday?

Me: yup.

Sulaiman: Nak birthday!

Ayub: so got not school?

Me: yup.

Sulaiman: nak go to schooooool!

Ayub: is there cake?

Me: no.

Ayub: awwww so sad zazan got no cake Ayub got cake on Ayub birthday zazan got no cake.

Sulaiman: nak cake.
